Programmatically Generated Objects - Digital Renderings

This project served as a chance to me to create digital renderings of some of my favorite 3D models.

The 3D models used here serve as a continuation of several previous projects:

1. Generating Digital Fabric focuses on my experiments with generating 3D models in fabric patterns programmatically using Processing.

2. Coding the Climate: 3D Data Visualization of Sea Ice Extent for Polar Seas discusses my approach to translating scientific data into 3D models.

3. Directly Casting Complex 3D Prints into Metal uses some of the same 3D models that are included here.

Old Models - New Perspective

These 3D designs were originally created as part of my work generating 3D models in Processing. They were then used as the basis for my cast metal sculptures. Here, they are rendered with a metallic shine using Photoshop.

Data in Arcs and Spirals

As a continuation of my work creating 3D models for sea ice data, I wanted to look at what would happen if I plotted the data on different shapes, such as arcs and spirals. Because the data was based on yearly changes, I thought the circular shapes could be a good fit. However, the results are, for the most part, too abstract to be informative.

Slumping Digital Fabric

I created a program with the goal of "slumping" digital fabric over a shape, and thus deforming the fabric to the shape of the object. The results weren't as representative of the source shape as I would have liked, but they did end up forming some interesting shapes.

Slumped Bowl

During the process of writing the code for "Slumping Digital Fabric," I created several 'test' 3D models. One of them, named "Slumped Bowl," is the result of a unique calibration of physics simulations and randomized variables. It is one of my favorite 3D models, and was shown (both in 3D rendering and 3D print form) at the Speculative Object Show at ICCCIA'23.
